Upper lip lift shortening surgery is a procedure used to reduce the space between the bottom of a patient's nose and upper lip (also known as the philtrum) while increasing the upper lip's size. Many patients are bothered by the length of their philtrum due to a variety of reasons such as their upper lip covering too much of their teeth or they feel it makes them look more "masculine." Others wish to undergo upper lip lift surgery because their lips are asymmetrical or they wish to achieve a permanently fuller upper lip without the use of fillers.

Your plastic surgeon will essentially remove a wedge of skin between your nostrils and upper lip to enhance the position, size, and appearance of your lip. LIP FILLER: A non-surgical treatment that uses an injectable hyaluronic acid filler to add volume, enhance the shape of the lips, improve symmetry, and create a fuller appearance. Depending on the product used and the individual patient, lip filler typically lasts around 1–2 years and requires maintenance treatments to maintain the desired volume.
UPPER LIP LIFT: A surgical procedure that enhances the upper lip in a completely different way. Instead of adding volume, a small amount of skin is removed through an incision placed just beneath the nose to shorten the distance between the nose and upper lip. This lifts the upper lip, increases the amount of pink lip that shows, and can create a more defined Cupid’s bow. The incision does leave a scar beneath the nose, which typically fades and becomes less noticeable as it continues to heal and mature. Because the change is surgical, the result is long-lasting.
Some patients who have regularly used lip filler eventually choose an upper lip lift because they want more lip show without relying on added volume or ongoing filler maintenance. Other patients want both a lift and added fullness, so an upper lip lift and lip filler can also be combined to achieve those different goals.

Recovery after an upper lip lift is relatively quick. Most patients feel comfortable returning to normal daily activities within 3–5 days, although swelling and incision healing will continue beyond this point.
You’ll notice a change in your upper lip immediately after surgery, but swelling can temporarily affect its appearance. About 70% of swelling typically subsides within 3 weeks, with your final results becoming more apparent as healing progresses over about 3 months.
